    My client from China, a CSO, was asked to be more assertive in board meetings. In his home region, "face" is a major concept. Speaking up could mean losing face – or causing his bosses to lose face - if he was wrong.


    This case illuminates how deeply held values and beliefs can become a barrier to adaptation in a new context. While the organisation also has a responsibility to understand the impact of their norms on their personnel.
